Product review – ökocat litter

Happy Sunday everyone! OMC, I can’t believe how pawsome the weather has been. In all my 5 years I haven’t seen a fall this fantastic. Mom said fall used to be like this all the time, but I’ve never seen it before. Warm during the day, cool and crispy at night, the way fall should be. Anyway, enough about fall.

20141011_180416The folks at chewy.com asked us to test out a new litter they’re carrying. It’s called ökocat litter. We tried out the Long Hair Breeds Clumping variety. There are three other varieties, too. The litter has lots of pros. From the chewy.com website:

“Okocat Natural Wood Long Hair Breeds Cat Litter contains specifically formulated pellets designed to keep litter in the box out and of your cat’s fur. Okocat litter is an eco friendly way to take care of your cat’s litter needs. It absorbs 500% its weight in moisture. It also clumps very well for easy scooping and disposing. Biodegradable for flushable disposal. Unlike powdery clay dust that can have chemicals, additives, and synthetic scents that are harmful to cats, Okocat Natural Wood Clumping Litter is free of additives and chemicals. With little-to-no dust, those with allergies in your home will breathe easy.

The natural plant fibers in Okocat bind and trap liquids and odors so they can’t escape. This litter is naturally antibacterial and biodegradable. Lightweight box with handle and pour spout are easy to carry and store.

Key Benefits

  • Controls odors for 7 days
  • Natural pine litter absorbs 500% its weight in moisture
  • Coniferous wood fights bacterial growth
  • Free of harmful chemicals & synthetic scents
  • Offers little to no airborne dust to bother allergies
  • Comes in compostable box”

Mom liked that the litter isn’t harmful to us. It really does control odor. We had the 8.4 lb. box. I can’t really judge how long the litter would last for the 3 of us because we have 2 other litter boxes with our regular litter, and all 3 boxes were used, but so far we got a month out of the box and what’s left would probably last us another 2 or 3 weeks. It really is lightweight, flushable, and really didn’t stick to my long furs. So it does live up to all its claims (except one).  Those are the pros, and they’re some pretty pawsome pros.

Now for the cons. The litter pellets won’t go through the slots in a standard litter scoop. That was first feedback we gave to chewy.com via an email. We suggested they send a scoop with it to the next testor. They were nice enough to send us a scoop that the pellets fit through, but it was very small. I’ve seen reviews of this scoop and they all complain about the same thing – the scoop is just too small and the handle is too short. I haven’t been able to find any other scoop that can handle pellet litter, so that’s something to consider if you’re thinking about changing to any pellet litter. The clumps don’t stay together very well, and because the scoop is so small, the clumps sometimes fall apart when you’re trying to scoop them out of the box. Also, the pellets do fall apart some making a lot of dust in the bottom of the box so I don’t know why they say it doesn’t have dust. It does!

20141011_18061220141102_114318Another con – look at the mess! As you can see from the two pictures, we started with the litter in a low sided box. We made a huge mess with it so mom switched it to a high sided box. We still made a huge mess! It tracks something terrible. This litter box is downstairs and mom’s found some of the litter upstairs! Mom thought being pellets (and being big and heavy compared to other litter pieces) they’d stay in the box. MOL!

Con number three – only EK used that new litter regularly. I used both litters, and Candy only used the old litter. Since Candy won’t use the new litter we couldn’t switch even if we wanted to. And frankly, that’s usually the decision maker when it comes to choosing litter – will we use it. That Candy won’t use it is a big enough con to outweigh all the pros, so we’re sticking with our old litter.

Even though Candy won’t use it, this litter really did have a lot of pros. More pros then most other litters we’ve tested in our search to find something better for us than crystal litter. I would strongly recommend testing this litter if you’re looking for a natural litter to try out. So far this has been the best of all the natural litters we’ve tested.

That’s it for today! Gotta go watch football. #GoBroncos! Have a great week everyone!
